The pattern, you always end up finding one. Size is another thing: it's the only mistake that makes the gift unusable. A duvet cover that's too small won't close, one that's too big floats and twists during the night. Here's how not to get it wrong, and how to know the bed size without giving away the surprise.
The rule that avoids 90% of mistakes
Measure the duvet, not the mattress.
It's counterintuitive but essential. A 140 cm wide bed doesn't call for a 140 cm cover: it calls for a 200x200 duvet, so a 200x200 cover. The duvet overhangs the mattress on each side, that's how it covers.
If you know the bed size but not the duvet size, the usual correspondence is this.

What the set includes by size
The number of pillowcases changes with size, and that's a common source of misunderstanding.

Not all models offer all these sizes. 140x210, 200x200, and 240x220 are the most common. The small size at €29.99 and 260x220 at €89.99 exist only in part of the catalog. The product page dropdown is the only reliable source: it shows exactly what's available for that pattern.
Knowing the size without ruining the surprise
Four methods, from most discreet to most direct.
Ask the bed size, not the duvet size. "Do you have a 140 or 160 cm bed?" passes as a normal question, especially after a move or a mattress purchase. Nobody connects it to bedding.
Go through someone else. A parent, partner, or roommate. In a couple, one can measure without the other knowing.
Check the label. If you have access to the room, the size is stitched onto the current duvet. Thirty seconds is enough.
Own the question. For a gift over €60, asking for size isn't tactless. Saying "I want to get you something for your room, I need the duvet size" preserves the pattern surprise, which is the main thing.
The three most common mistakes
Ordering by mattress width. The classic mistake: 140 cm bed doesn't equal 140 cm cover. Re-read the correspondence table above.
Assuming a size exists. The €29.99 kid size is rare. Before quoting a price or promising a size, open the product page and see what's actually available.
Forgetting the pillowcases. In 140x210 the set comes with one pillowcase. For a single bed that's normal, but if the recipient sleeps with two pillows, let them know or make it up.
If you're still unsure
Go for 200 x 200 cm. It's the most common size in French households, for a 140 cm bed, and statistically the most likely to hit right. Slip the model name in the card: if the size doesn't fit, they'll know exactly what to ask for.
